Amsterdam wins prestigious Cruisers’ Choice Destination Award

Cruise travellers around the world have named Amsterdam the best cruise destination in the British Isles & Western Europe region for 2016. The selection was announced on 14 September 2016 on the Cruise Critic website, one of the biggest and most influential online cruise resources.

“We are very proud to receive this award, especially because the passengers themselves selected us as their number one choice,” said Alma Prins, cruise manager at the Port of Amsterdam. “We are very grateful and hope to welcome them again as our guests in the future!”

The awards were granted based exclusively on destination reviews posted by consumers on the Cruise Critic website over the past year. No polls or surveys were held – only first-hand feedback from the travellers themselves.

This was the first time the Cruise Critic held the Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards, which spanned 15 regions around the world. The overall winner was St. Petersburg, Russia, while European river cruise port cities received the highest scores across the board. Cruise Critic has gathered over 160,000 cruise reviews on over 500 ships and 300 ports since it launched in 1995.

A recent Cruise Critic survey indicates that cruise travellers are primarily guided by the reputation of the destination when planning a cruise, which proves true for first-time cruise travellers and seasoned passengers alike.

In its announcement, Cruise Critic stated that cruises offer an opportunity to visit several destinations in one voyage, necessitating careful planning on the part of the travellers to ensure they see everything they wish to see at a specific port in a limited time.

Due to the expansive number of destinations, travellers view the personal and independent recommendations from other travellers to destinations such as Amsterdam as a welcome guiding light. When a destination wins the Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards, it is not only a compliment but a powerful recommendation, according to Cruise Critic.

On its website, Cruise Critic describes “the tree-lined canal streets of Amsterdam” as having a “fairy-tale quality…Boutiques, cafes, apartments and hotels may hide behind the facades of the gabled townhouses, but the look of this beautiful old city has not changed much since its 17th-century Golden Age.”

Cruise Critic is owned by TripAdvisor, the largest collection of travel websites in the world, with more than 385 million independent reviews by travellers.
