Cruise Shipping Miami: 'The lock is the key, the key is the lock'

With this catchy pronouncement Port of Amsterdam’s CEO Dertje Meijer opened the Amsterdam Cruise Port Breakfast, an annual networking event hosted by Amsterdam Cruise Port during the largest global shipping exhibition and conference: Cruise Shipping Miami. Meijer symbolically presented the cruise liners a key to the new lock, stating.

New lock operational by 2019

The new lock is of great importance to the cruise liners, as cruise vessels continuously increase in scale. The lock will guarantee the port’s accessibility for the new generation of medium-sized and large vessels. The announcement that the new lock will be operational by 2019 resulted in many happy faces amongst the present cruise liner representatives. Amsterdam is future-proof and therefore able to maintain its position as one of the most important and attractive cruise destinations in Northern Europe.

Influences to call at a port

The potential for market growth in cruise holidays remains. Despite of the slight decrease in the amount of cruise passengers in 2014, the greater Amsterdam area continues to be extremely popular. Simon Douwes, Director, Deployment & Itinerary Planning, at Holland America Line even stated: ‘Northern Europe is where we do the best business. Passengers who choose this attractive destination are willing to spend money.’ A cruise liner’s decision to call at a certain port is not only based on how lucrative an area is. Other important influences are the nautical accessibility, mooring and handling facilities, sightseeing possibilities and the political stability.

Finalization vision sea cruise

With the arrival of the new lock Amsterdam can start preparing for the arrival of more and larger vessels. The coming period the new ‘sea cruise vision greater Amsterdam area’ will be finalized, resulting into actions to further put cruise on the map in Amsterdam. Iamsterdam = Iamcruise.
